This song was written by 3rd and 5th graders from McCook Central Elementary School in Salem, SD. After several lessons on the elements of poetry and songs, students were led through multiple journaling exercises, writing responses to different prompts and discussions. Their writings were then compiled into lyrics and put to music composed by Kate. Take a moment to listen to the recording of their song, Art, Songs, and Water, below and get a direct view into the minds of our next generation.

TESTIMONIALS

Kat brought with her a solid training of language, poetry, and music, which allowed her to relate to all grade level students.
— Debra E.
I have rarely met a more passionate, clear-thinking individual...Ms. Baum uses her talents in language and music in a powerful way to facilitate creativity and healing in others.
— Dawn S.
Students gravitate towards her charisma, and her talent, dedication, and integrity always leave a lasting impression on any audience.
— Megan O.
As someone who got first hand experience with watching Kat’s residency program, I would highly recommend her to any school or service group. Baum was able to capture every student’s attention and truly engage each kid individually to really awaken their creative sides.
— Kyler F.
During my time of instructing art programs at Canyon Hills Center and working with at-risk students, often the students’ participation all depends on how the instructors can relate to the students. Within our first session together, Baum had already begun to build a relationship with the kids through music and lyric writing. So much so, that even after two months had passed, I still have students who ask about Kat.
— Canyon Hills Center
It was an honor, and a fun time getting to work with Kat. Her use of story-telling through lyrics and creative writing was the perfect exercise for students who are at-risk, and I hope that someday she can return to CHC for another residency.
